Cyber bullying
Cyber bullying is the use of technology to harm an individual's emotional state or social stature. Cyber bullying is the most common form of bullying today. Studies today put the number of victims at 72% of students or 55.4 million students, that makes up the total population of the state New York about three times over.
The reason cyber bullying is the most common type of bullying is because it is the easiest to do without the guilt afterwords. Our conscience is what keeps us from being cruel from others, but with cyber bullying the human factor is removed and our conscience doesn't tell us that we are hurting someone because we can't see the effects of our actions.
Cyber bullying may be considered the weakest form of bullying, but it is the most commonly compounded upon. For most cyber bullying is the final step in destroying a person's self-esteem. They want to come home for an escape from the torment only to be emotionally degraded at home too. Most bullying related suicides have been shown to be at least partially related to social media web-sites like Facebook or Twitter.
Indirect Bullying and Social Alienation
Indirect bullying and Social alienation are very similar to each other. Indirect bullying is the spreading of rumors about someone, excluding a person from a group, or telling things someone has told you in confidence. Social Alienation is the intentional exclusion of people from a group or using a persons differences in order to make fun of them. These two types of bullying make up 21.5% of bullying or 16.5 million people, roughly the population of New York.
Indirect bullying and social alienation are the third most common types of bullying. The two are often done in unison, because they are so similar. Most people who experience these types of bullying feel that they have no friends and avoid social activities such as sports, charities, parties, and even dating.
These two types of bullying are considered the second strongest types of bullying, because they have the some of the most debilitating effects. People that are bullied commonly fall back on their friends to talk to and get through the way they are being treated, but with these types of bullying people are unlikely to feel like they have anyone they can talk to and will often keep their emotions bottled up until they "come unscrewed" and end up lashing out against themselves or others.
Intimidation and Physical Bullying
Intimidation and physical bullying are related most of the time. Physical bullying is the use of force to cause bodily harm to another person. Intimidation is the use of fear, commonly ascertained through physical bullying, to get another person to what you want. An example of this would be when a school bully threatens another child in order to get their lunch money.
These two make up the least common types of bullying because they are the most personal and the most likely to have repercussions. However, when they are done they are often done on a daily basis and the victim is often too afraid of their attacker to report it.
These forms of bullying have a very intense effect on their victims, although the physical effects can be extreme, to say the very least, the psychological effects are the most notable. Victims commonly experience one of two very different effects, some experience a need to retake control and may lash out very violently, and others experience a phobia of the place the bullying occurs. The violent reaction ranges from video games to animal abuse or even school shootings; the phobic reaction ranges from a nervous twitch in the area to throwing fits at the very thought of having to go to the area.
Verbal bullying
Verbal bullying can be considered the umbrella of bullying, because it covers many of the other groups. Verbal bullying is the calling of other names, making antisemitic, sexist, or racist remarks, making fun of a person's social or monetary status, or making fun of the way a person looks. Verbal bullying was considered the number one method of bullying for many years until the massive increase in the use of technology, including texting, and social media. Now verbal bullying is only number two effecting only 46.5% of students.
Verbal bullying is both the most intense and the weakest form of bullying. Most students have been bullied verbally, but in most cases it's minor and doesn't bother a person, but in the extreme cases a person may be told they are worthless hundreds of times in a day. Over time being told their worthless will whittle away at a person's self-esteem and cause adverse effects.
Verbal bullying has the second highest suicide rate of all types of bullying and is one of the most dangerous.
